    Contents

    Understanding the organization, and functions of nervous system, including cells and molecules involved. Understanding the cellular and molecular basis of the main human diseases affecting the CNS.

    Textbook and course materials

    Basic texts:
    -Principles of Neurobiology, Liqun Luo, 2016, Garland Science;
    -Principle of Neural Sciences, Kandel ER et al., 2012, McGraw-Hill;
    Further reading:
    - Astrocyte, Physiology and Pathology, Gentile MT and Colucci-D’Amato L, 2018, IntechOpen; scientific articles provided during the course.

    Course objectives

    The course is designed to describe the structural and functional basis of the organization of the Nervous System, as well as the pathogenetic mechanisms of its main diseases. The course will also describe the main experimental approaches to study neural alterations, including cellular and animal models. Finally, students will be introduced to the main recent advances that have challenged long-standing beliefs in the function of Nervous System and their implications in the mechanisms of diseases will be discussed.

    Prerequisites

    Knowledge acquired with a Bachelor degree in Biotechnology or in Biology, or equivalent academic degrees.

    Teaching methods

    Frontal lessons.Moreover, lectures will be also given by invited speakers on selective topics.PowerPoint presentations by students on selective topics.

    Evaluation methods

    Students will be assessed through a combination of examination (written test including 30 multiple-choice questions) and coursework (i.e. presentation of articles, bibliographic search activity, active interactions with lecturers)
