| Course objectives | The course aims to provide the student with knowledge on the role of biological invasions as threats to the conservation of biodiversity. |
| Prerequisites | Students must have a good level of knowledge of plant morphology, histology and cytology, as well as plant ecology. |
| Teaching methods | The course consists of 40 hours including lectures and exercises conducted in the laboratory and in the field. The exercises carried out in nature have the aim of applying theoretical notions relating to the identification of the main exotic species, the assessment of impacts on biodiversity, and the preparation of management actions. |
| Assessment methods | The examination aims to evaluate the student's knowledge about the the topic of biological plant invasions. |
| Other information | The teacher is available for receiving students as indicated in the teacher profile (https://www.distabif.unicampania.it/dipartimento/docenti?MATRICOLA=706093). |
| Detailed syllabus | Factors that regulate plant biodiversity at global and local scales. Distribution ranges of the species, native and alien species. Human activities and spread of alien species. Role of artificial green areas in the diffusion of propagules. Human perception regarding the problem of biological invasions. Invasion process. Functional traits of invasive alien species. Invasibility of ecosystems. Identification and classification of alien plant species. Analysis of vegetation types and habitats characterized by exotic species. Case studies regarding the main invasive species and non-native plant communities in Italy. Evaluation of the impacts of alien plants on native biodiversity, on the functioning of natural and/or semi-natural ecosystems, as well as on humans (including health aspects). Planning of control actions (prevention, control, eradication and ecological restoration). European Union (Regulation no. 1143/2014 and subsequent additions) and Italian legislation (Legislative decree 15 December 2017, n. 230) aimed at preventing and managing the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. |
