Course objectives | The course contributes to the realization of the educational objective of the course of studies in Biological Sciences (L-13) providing knowledge and application skills regarding the strategies of prevention of human health. The course in particular aims to provide students with basic knowledge about the epidemiological methodology for the study of infectious diseases and their prevention, as well as knowledge of the main problems of environmental contamination and intervention methods. At the end of the course the student must know and understand the main features of the interaction between pathogenic microbes and human host, the events of the infective chain, the prevention and prophylaxis measures of infectious diseases with particular regard to active immune prophylaxis using vaccines, the modalities transmission of the main infectious diseases; must also have acquired the ability to identify and analyze the factors that influence health at the individual and community level, to understand health promotion strategies, to recognize the etiology of communicable diseases and transmission routes, to integrate the knowledge acquired with the teaching of Hygiene with those of the other courses of the CdS. |
Prerequisites | Knowledge provided in the biological disciplines foreseen in the previous years of the course (Cytology and Histology preparatory examination), as well as adequate bases of mathematics and chemistry. The student must have acquired and assimilated the fundamental concepts relating to the classification and characteristics of the main types of microorganisms. |
Teaching methods | The course is structured in 64 hours of theoretical frontal lessons (frequency strongly recommended) carried out by the teacher with the help of power-point presentations and 8 hours of laboratory (4 sessions of 2 hours each in the didactic laboratory of Experimental Biology 2) whose activities include experiences in which students, who will work in groups of 2/3 members, are asked to perform, by simple analytical methods, the determination of the hardness, chlorides and biological indices of infectious risk of a water sample. During the exercises the frequency will be recorded by collecting signatures. The student cannot be absent from laboratory activities for more than 25% of the hours. In the case of special needs (student-workers, pregnancy, etc.), upon request documented to the teacher, the CCdS will express itself regarding the frequency of laboratory activities. |
Evaluation methods | To verify the achievement of the set didactic objectives and the acquisition of the theoretical contents foreseen by the program of the course there will be an individual oral test which will have as its object the topics covered during the lessons and the exercises. During the course of the exam, the knowledge of the topic (accuracy and completeness of the answers, mastery of the contents), the exposition of the topic (properties of the language used, use of specific terminology), the capacity for development critical (ability to use the acquired knowledge and to link them in the argumentation, ability to discuss and deepen the various topics in various aspects). The exam is considered passed with a minimum mark of 18/30 up to a maximum of 30/30 and honors. |
